The Managing Director, Investment Operations reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer. The position oversees all operational and financial aspects of the Investment Office, including custodian operations, finance (including reporting, tax, accounting, and budgeting), and all aspects of the employee savings plans. In addition to streamlining effective operations of the office, the successful candidate will co-lead operational due diligence on potential investments and serve as a voting member on all manager recommendations. S/he will also be the Investment Office liaison for all corporate interactions and initiatives. The Managing Director, Investment Operations should be a results-driven leader, who is motivated by the mission of the Investment Office and establishing and managing best-in-class processes and teams.



This position will require comprehensive management of the Investment Office operations and all investment aspects of the employee savings plans. The Managing Director, Investment Operations will establish and maintain strong relationships skills with both internal and external contacts.


Primary responsibilities include:

  • Investment Operations
    • Overseeing and managing all operational aspects of the Investment Office, including custodian operations and all back-office activity (i.e., capital calls, cash and stock distributions, regulatory/compliance documentation requests, trade settlements, account openings/closures, and subscription and redemption documents)
    • Maintaining optimal asset structure for benefit trusts, to ensure maximum investment efficiency, enhanced and timely performance reporting, and compelling overall costs
    • Assisting in establishing appropriate performance measurement reports
    • Proactively developing and maintaining relationships with third party providers such as custodians, brokers, fund administrators, and software vendors, ensuring strong oversight and execution of ongoing deliverables
    • Overseeing the transaction and allocation processes for all pension funds, retiree healthcare trusts, and employee savings plans
    • Leading all governance committee planning and reporting
    • Overseeing the operational due diligence of potential investments and providing an operational assessment of investments as a voting member of the Investment Committee
    • Serving as Secretary to the Corporate Investment Committee
  • Investment Finance
    • Facilitating the flow of information between the investment team and internal accounting and finance teams
    • Leading budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning for the Investment Office
    • Acting as the primary liaison for external audit and tax resources and engagements
    • Developing and maintaining excellent record keeping practices that can support Department of Labor and IRS audits
  • Technology
    • Overseeing the effective use of investment technology, including the portfolio management software (Aladdin) and analytics software (Caissa)
    • Evaluating additional vendors and technology for use by the Investment Office
    • Working with investment and operations teams to customize reporting, data and analytics, and knowledge management for the office
  • Employee Savings Plans
    • Developing, maintaining, and monitoring a best-in-class employee savings plan investment menu ensuring that Exelon&rsquos employees have access to a broad range of investment managers that exceed their performance benchmarks over time, while maintaining fiduciary safeguards
    • Overseeing the strategy and monitoring for all investment related activity within the Employee Savings Plan
    • Developing and guiding participant communication efforts with HR
  • Corporate Initiatives
    • Leading Investment Office participation in all corporate initiatives
    • Participating in pension coordination efforts with the internal accounting and finance teams
    • Managing the investment operations aspects of ad hoc projects and requests
  • People Management
    • Working with the CIO and senior team members on team/resource planning and budgeting
    • Attracting, hiring, training, mentoring, and managing a team of operations and finance professionals



The successful candidate will possess a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a senior operations or finance professional at a sophisticated investment platform. S/he will have proven technical expertise and capabilities in relevant functional areas, and a demonstrated record of leadership, team building, and management of an operations or finance function.  Additional qualifications include:

  • Experience providing oversight of a comprehensive investment operations function, and/or a finance function, alongside significant responsibility for operational and technology improvements
  • Familiarity and comfort with overseeing the breadth of internal finance functions, including accounting, audit, tax, budgeting, and reporting
  • Strong interpersonal skills to manage relationships with outside vendors, and interfaces with business unit, business service company, and corporate center groups
  • Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills experience with software systems relevant to investment, reporting, and risk management is desirable
  • A proactive interest in streamlining processes and knowledge of available technology in that pursuit
  • Comprehensive knowledge of investment, finance, economic practices and performance measurement, and style analysis demonstrated technical knowledge of investments, operations, and industry dynamics
  • Highly organized proven ability to develop project plans, provide regular updates, and adjust project direction as needed
  • Self-motivated and directed possessing an ability to motivate others
  • The highest level of integrity, intellectual capability, honesty, and ethics
  • MBA and/or CPA preferred
