Summary of Role

The Sr Market Research Analyst position will be part of a dynamic Emerging Technologies and Innovation team that has the primary purpose to research, identify, and pursue projects that will result in significant and positive impacts for our businesses, our customers and our communities. The successful candidate will collaborate with Innovation, R&D, and BGE Strategy & Regulatory Affairs (SRA) Teams to ensure our Smart Energy Vision is aligned with technology market trends. This position requires strategic thinking, independent project management and a strong desire for leadership responsibility. In particular, candidates must have interest in operating effectively in ambiguous situations, collaborating with stakeholders, evaluating future market trends, and translating numbers to deliver key business recommendations. Additionally, candidates must consistently deliver with a bias-for-action while displaying solid written, communication, and presentation skills, attention to detail, commitment to quality, superior analytical capabilities and demonstrated initiative.
 


PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

This analyst will work with all areas of the organization to analyze and explain short term market conditions, market dynamics and predict 1 to 5 year future conditions in markets and all facets of the economy. The focus of this role is to offer Constellation a strategic, competitive advantage in market analysis in the 1 to 5 year time frame.



PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Understanding key market drivers and their impact on our business
  • Model short term market trends in power and natural gas
  • Develop and run econometric models for economy, load and fuels i.e. gas storage, regional power load, GDP, industrial demand etc.
  • Research and access data on a variety of web sites and data bases
  • Run off the shelf and proprietary analytic models and customize where needed i.e. GPCM, Aurora etc.
  • Evaluate modeling results and have the ability to discuss results in a concise, lucid fashion
  • Work in a team setting on projects that develop analytics
  • Present findings to management, communicate to various parties both internally and externally
  • The analyst will also have other research responsibilities as required and may be asked to participate in other Fundamental and Technical Analysis projects. The ability to work on ad-hoc, time sensitive projects is a priority.


JOB SCOPE

The analytics work performed and reported on will have major impact short and long term decision made throughout the organization. There is a high level of decision making on the analytic performed. There is no direct managerial role but the candidate will be responsible for mentoring junior team members, working closely with more senior members of the organization and collaborating with the trade floor and corporate. Reports to Managing Director, Power Fundamentals.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in business, engineering, economics or other research discipline required
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience
  • Self motivated and able to work individually with little supervision and as part of a larger group
  • Strong research and project management skills
  • Comfort working with abstract concepts with limited guidance
  • Outstanding mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Remarkable level problem solving capabilities
  • Outstanding written and communication skills
  • Motivated to achieve results in a collaborative and rapidly evolving market


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate Degree
  • At least two years of experience evaluating the impacts of markets, including exposure to economic modeling.
  • Programming skills SAS, C++, Matlab preferred
  • Trading experience a plus
  • Hard-working, detail oriented, creative, and comfortable manipulating and analyzing complex data sets
  • Proven leadership, communication, writing skills, and track record for delivering results
  • Ability to push projects forward in the face of ambiguity, and an entrepreneurial mindset
  • Experience implementing complex projects with the ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks at the same time
  • Experience successfully interpreting data and telling a story with that data via PowerPoint or other deliverable tools
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word (with Tableau and PowerBI a plus)
  • Hard-working, detail oriented, creative, and comfortable manipulating and analyzing complex data sets
  • Proven leadership, communication, writing skills, and track record for delivering results
  • Ability to push projects forward in the face of ambiguity, and an entrepreneurial mindset

  1. Handling the details of implementing and managing all phases of market research and strategic innovation projects
  2. Collaborate with BGE Strategy and other internal partners to identify emerging markets while pursuing innovation and R&D projects that align with technology trends
  3. Work closely with various strategic initiatives and groups such as Utility of the Future, Smart Grid, Fleet Electrification, EVs, remote training technologies, Drones, etc.
  4. Guide research and analysis in a manner that is effective in implementing a focused marketing and product strategy

  6. Drive focused business initiatives and innovation projects that lead to meaningful outcomes and shared lessons learned

  8. Serve as a thought partner by using innovation methodologies to advance different internal departmental needs


Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
