Purpose of the Position

This is an exciting and challenging position with the opportunity to lead improvements to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and their integration into the BGE operations. This position is in the BGE Smart Grid and Innovation group. The successful candidate will be the Manager of the UAS/Drone team at BGE. The successful candidate will have a strong technical foundation with knowledge of UAS operations and the NAS to facilitate UAS induction into BGE, efforts to standardize data exchanged by UAS systems and stakeholders, along with data formats, data models, and associated standards, policies, and guidance. The person will responsible for the entire operations, strategy, technology, business development, trainings, and management of the UAS team. Manage overall project deliverables, schedule, and financials. Develop program management plans, budgets, cost estimates, and track financials. Assess project risks and implement mitigation strategies.

Candidate will also provide technical system engineering and program management support such as strategic planning, financial planning, schedule, and integration with other BGE programs. The candidate must be able to coordinate with FAA leadership, internal/external stakeholders, program management offices, technical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and partners to ensure that project activities and deliverables are properly scoped, defined, and delivered on schedule, and that technical and programmatic issues are mitigated or addressed.

Preferred qualifications:

  1. Active Part 107 certificate with real flight time experience
  2. Expert level experience in handling various types of Drones
  3. Operational knowledge of at least 2 UAS platforms and applications
  4. Solid understanding of the DJI Platform and various policies
  5. Experience in developing and delivering general and use case specific training of UAS usage
  6. In-depth understanding of the cyber security polies, procedures, and issues
  7. Experience in performing R&D, identifying use cases, and operationalizing use cases
  8. Training and ability to perform night missions
  9. Experience in flying drones with multiple payloads and custom modifications
  10. Understanding of aviation data exchange concepts, flows, methods, and formats (eg Flight Object, geospatial data, GeoJSON, etc.).
  11. Strong analytical skills and ability to critically assess technical and programmatic issues. Ability to understand big picture while also have attention to detail.
  12. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to situations in dynamic new business environment
  13. Ability to work within a team environment as well as independently

This job is responsible for managing, organizing, and controlling various engineering, project management, and reliability activities within designated function of accountability. This includes managing and insuring compliance and adherence to accepted standard engineering and design practices for public improvement, system reliability, and system capacity projects across the distribution system while managing and controlling the scope of work, maintaining focus on accuracy, and ensuring constructability at the least cost. This position may be required to work extended hours including 24x7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies


  • Manage a specialized department within the engineering function that performs planning and provides support to associations and industry groups with consideration for company needs and regulatory requirements. Provide staff with technical guidance, engineering expertise and training in all facets of planning. Hire, coach, counsel, evaluate, and manage staff, both directly and indirectly reporting to this position.
  • Manage the performance and development of assigned engineering personnel relative to site and corporate objectives and provide focus on the attainment of high-quality engineering results. Manage Business Planning, Budget, and Business Performance review regarding assigned staff.
  • Directly and through subordinates, fulfill engineering and technical leadership accountability by driving the development and implementation of short-term and long-term strategic initiatives and programs that impact company operations, assure highest levels of customer services, and achieve Exelon’s safety, reliability, and performance goals.
  • Assure the development, collection, preparation, verification and/or maintenance of company data for inclusion in various reports to government, industry, and regulatory bodies.
  • Directs and/or performs technical evaluation and/or testimony in preparation for rate cases, DOT, or FERC filings.
  • Participate as senior resource to companywide programs and initiatives regarding standardized and enhanced engineering systems and processes.

Manages staff reporting directly or indirectly to this position. Accountable for assigned budget as well as staffing, development, compensation, and related human resource needs of assigned employees. Ensures all plans are coordinated with all pertinent areas across the company. Determines the effect of various actions and policies on the reliability, economics and operability of the distribution systems. Coordinate, monitor, and evaluate outside contractors as required. Develop, manage and continuously evaluate outsourcing strategy that optimizes staffing and utilization of internal and external resources. This job has regular interaction with senior management, managers, and government officials to support distribution engineering and reliability practices.


  • BS Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical degree
  • At least 8-10 years Professional-Level Engineering experience, including at least 5 years utility related experience (gas, electric, distribution, transmission, reliability, maintenance, design, standards, etc)
  • Experience in providing leadership in a high performance culture
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience of distribution engineering practices
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers
  • Ability to independently represent the Company in various industry and regulatory forums
  • Ability to perform highly complex analysis; formulate recommendations to inprove current processes; make sound decisions; understand industry and regulatory trends; evaluate impact of new developments and information involving market conditions
  • Business acumen, customer awareness and ability to create value / eliminate non-value activity

  • Professional Engineering Registration
  • Advanced technical degree, MBA
  • At least 3 years people management experience
