PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Performs activities to support operations and maintenance of Exelon Utilities Information Technology (IT) solutions related to wireless Smart Grid Field Area Network (FAN) communications. This position reports into the IT Utility Communications (UComm) organization.Under the general direction of more experienced personnel, provides technical support of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Distribution Automation (DA), and Land Mobile Radio (LMR) networks deployed throughout the Exelon Utility companies in accordance with established safety, design, security, and process requirements.

Expands and applies knowledge of customer and IT processes to job activities.  Works to promote standardization, improve network performance and reliability, optimize operational cost, and increase customer satisfaction.  Assists in the creation and coordination of tasks for subordinates.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provide technical expertise and operational support for UComm Field Area Network related technologies deployed in production, including AMI and DA wireless mesh networks, LMR networks, Demand Response paging network, and various legacy wireless network technologies.  Engage other resources as needed to resolve end-to-end communications issues.  Perform all work, especially field work, in a safe manner, per Exelon safety policies.  Participate in on-call duty rotation.
  • Actively support process improvement activities to increase standardization and improve operational effectiveness.  Utilize best practices to improve Utility Communications products and services.  Ensure adherence to standards as outlined in the Exelon Management Model.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with other IT team members, contractors, and our Utility business partners to foster collaboration and teamwork.  Mentor and coach less experienced personnel.
  • Identify and report IT operational trends and issues.  Participate in IT architecture review and standards setting activities to identify impacts on Operational Support.
  • Build business and IT knowledge from experienced personnel and apply in daily work activity.  Maintain technical knowledge and business acumen within own discipline or function.
  • Complete all Exelon required training on time to maintain compliance with company and regulatory policies.  Document work activities per Exelon Corporate and UComm team requirements. 

 

POSITION SCOPE:

  • Develops and maintains deep knowledge of UComm Field Area Network supported wireless network technologies and support processes.
  • Works effectively with Exelon IT and Utility Business Partners, outsourcing vendors, and other contractors to diagnose and resolve wireless network issues.
  • Maintains strong background and experience with radio frequency (RF) and wireless technologies.
  • Participates in continuous improvement efforts in order to enhance UComm’s processes, implement best practices, and increase UComm’s value to the Business
  • Develops and publishes operational metrics or other documentation as needed
  • Performs work in the field as required, and rotates on-call duty with other team members

 

Qualifications

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline; and 2 to 5 years’ experience in IT network infrastructure or telecommunication technology support; or 6 to 9 years’ equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Working knowledge of wireless networks, IP routing, and associated network technologies & protocols
  • Ability to travel to and work in field locations, including electrical substations; ability to perform on-call duty responsibilities per rotational duty schedule
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills; able to effectively communicate highly technical information in non-technical business terminology (written and verbal)

Preferred:

  • 3+ years’ experience in a wireless network communications support role
  • Technical certification and/or knowledge in Technical Area of Specialty, where applicable (CCNA, CCNP, ITIL, etc.)
  • Experience working in a regulated utility environment; general understanding of SCADA communications protocols (DNP3, DLP)
