This position is in BGE’s Distribution Automation and Technology unit, part of Smart Grid and Innovation group, and will play a crucial role in making BGE operational divisions into a data driven organization. This role specifically supports various groups within the Distribution Engineering and Standards Department.


  • Work closely with Manager of Distribution Automation &Technology and other Engineering and Standards Business Managers in mapping the strategy and identifying the use cases for the Smart Grid Metering, Distribution Automation, Engineer Design and Standards, and Distribution Planning and Reliability
  • Partner tightly with the Senior Data Scientist to accurately develop the models, test them, and deploy them to internal customers
  • Develop/Enhance CVR/OSI algorithms and support creation of M&V, CVR, DERM and DA related scripts.
  • Integrate disparate data sources (e.g. from line sensors, reclosers, weather stations, etc.) to better facilitate brainstorming of ideas that position BGE to be ready for the future.
  • Will not only be technically/domain proficient but also needs to understand and be part of the business development and support activities
  • Actively challenge current popular values opinions and business processes to substantially benefit the customer experience and execute organizational strategies
  • Be a leader in building a culture of continuous learning by partnering with Exelon Utilities Analytics, staying on top of current trends, and sharing learnings with other employees throughout the organization
  • Coach and mentor less experienced members of the DA&T unit
  • Work closely with various corporate stakeholders within Exelon Utilities Operating Companies

The Quantitative Engineer will lead initiatives on developing quantitative methodologies and providing quantitative analysis to support engineering studies, plans, calculations, evaluations, design documents, integrated systems analysis, cost estimates, budgets, associated with the research, planning, design, operation, and maintenance of Exelon Utilities’ overall strategic plans and initiatives. The Quantitative Engineer will develop and maintain quantitative analytical models and methodologies to identify trends and predict outcomes, provide explanations of the modeling and its results to management and senior leaders. The person will be responsible of monitoring and responding to business needs by staying abreast of developments in the energy industry and provide analysis/reports to meet those needs.

Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24x7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.


  • Leads and performs assignments in specialized areas requiring extensive quantitative analysis, research and engineering expertise.
  • Leads and performs tasks associated with critical or analytical engineering projects, develop and maintain quantitative analytical models and methodologies to identify trends and predict outcomes, provide explanations of the modeling and its results to management and senior leaders.
  • Evaluates, develops, implements and leads strategic and engineering projects that have significant financial and operational impact by applying quantitative analysis.
  • Participates in department planning, provide budget recommendations and monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results.
  • Performs assignments while acting independently and may lead multi-discipline teams.
  • Serves as an expert in the quantitative engineering area.
  • Acts as an expert witness or provide expert opinions as required.
  • Provides recommendations and implements action plans to improve performance and cost effectiveness.
  • Provides training and/or guidance to others.
  • Participates in technical and industry societies and committees to enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues in areas of company interest.


  • Influences project decisions and strategy having a significant impact on the company.
  • Applies technical knowledge to help promote a safe work environment and to enhance customer satisfaction






  • Graduate degree (MS or above) or Graduate level work in quantitative discipline (e.g., electrical engineering, industrial engineering, statistics, operations research, economics, computer science, data analytics, mathematics, physics, etc.).
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems, and provide quantitative engineering analysis
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
  • Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices.
  • 10 or more years of professional engineering or quantitative analyst experience.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience in unique areas of engineering expertise.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, codes methods, and practices unique to areas of expertise.
  • Ability to apply advanced engineering principles to identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Technical applications of complex subjects
  • Develops and executes complex technical proposals
  • Experience articulating business questions and using mathematical techniques to arrive at an answer using available data. Experience translating analysis results into business recommendations.
  • Draw on knowledge of programming in MATLAB, Python, R, C++, SQL, VBA skills to develop and maintain the models that guide the company’s engineering activities.
  • Minimum of three related career experiences (3) in quantitative and engineering discipline (i.e., changes in technical job responsibilities, which may or may not include a change in department) OR
  • Lead Member of a recognized industry committee


  • Domain knowledge of the utility industry (especially the distribution areas) with ability to learn quickly and teach others useful industry standards
  • Experience or understanding of distribution system engineering, planning, operations, grid modernization technology and analytics, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Network Optimization, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), and Electric Vehicle impacts
  • Experience developing ETL pipelines for use cases; end-to-end experience is greatly preferred
  • Experience developing visuals using Power BI or other visualization software and automating reporting capabilities
  • Ability to determine data needs and obtain data for use cases
  • Experience obtaining insights from data in the form of descriptive analytics and visuals, and lay path forward for diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics
  • Experience with Python, R, C / C++, DNP, ICCP Oracle in obtaining and manipulating data (Python = HIGHEST priority)
  • Experience with SCADA systems and developing software products to automate process.
  • Experience working with RTUs, Battery systems and DA field devices
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all management levels.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated industry leadership & publication record (in quantitative/engineering discipline)
  • Demonstrated experience in complex multi-year research and analysis efforts
  • Demonstrated experience to expand R&D background to practical solutions (in quantitative/engineering discipline)
  • Professional Engineer’s License, advanced technical degree, MBA or Project Management Certification
