Please review the job expectations for each unit below: 


Smart Metering and Technology Unit


-Executes, modifies, and writes test scripts to prove functionality of network, and smart metering equipment.

-Supports regression testing for changes to device firmware, and integrated proprietary software.

-Interfaces with third party vendors for defect reporting, enhancement requests, and troubleshooting. 

-Assists Senior Engineers with analysis and written work products.  The minimum requirements are for the same degrees so we don’t create additional ones.


Distribution Automation & Technology Unit

The co-op student in Distribution Automation & Technology will primarily support the Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) and Distribution Automation (DA) systems. Technologies include capacitor banks, DA reclosers and fault circuit indicators, their associated real-time systems, and the DA Field Area Network Communications System.

Tasks/Job Duties:

-deployment planning,

-support of commissioning activities,

-creation/maintenance of internal databases and software applications,

-development of one line displays and management of devices in BGE DA/CVR/FCI real time applications,

-maintenance of records in BGE’s asset management application,

-monitoring of alarms and associated troubleshooting,

-creation of corrective maintenance work orders, support of new technology pilots, as well as other similar engineering tasks as needed.

The co-op student will interact daily with the core BGE DA&T team and other engineering teams within BGE, contractors and field personnel


Electric Distribution Engineering and Standards Unit

-Assists experienced engineers in performing well-defined engineering assignments in specialized areas requiring engineering expertise exercising independent discretion. (e.g. Collect data, perform complex analysis, interpret results, draw conclusions, and clearly present a recommendation to management)

-Provides support to engineering and operating groups to analyze specific design, installation and maintenance activities.  Assists in the performance of complex engineering assignments

-Assists with technical consultation, plan developments, and recommendations for customer and company systems and processes

-Evaluates effectiveness of current technical systems and processes

-Assist in the development of engineering calculations, specifications, and constructions standards.

-In addition, work with Subject Matter Experts to develop and modify inspection programs specifications.

-Lead failure analysis projects for equipment or material.

-Prepare presentations or white papers with investigations results.

-Assist in data analytics efforts in order to identify trends and provide recommendations based on the ana analysis results

-Other tasks and assignments as assigned by leadership


Reliability Maintenance and Planning Unit

-Assists in the analysis of system reliability issues and the engineering of programs and projects to improve customer reliability / customer experience outcomes.

-Support the identification of cable replacement jobs and development of scope documents for job package creation to execute cable replacement work. 

-Support reliability metric reporting and trend identification.

-Support tracking of work with Public Service Commission Commitments. 

-Where skills allow, support the development of PowerBI and other reporting dashboards to disseminate key reliability and work execution data to support improved awareness and performance.

-Other tasks and assignments as assigned by leadership


Distribution Planning Unit

The Engineering Co-op is involved in engineering support of Baltimore Gas and Electric’s Electrical Distribution system. This includes aspects of distribution system planning, service reliability analysis, and project management.


-The Engineering Co-op plays an important role in developing projects to improve equipment loading, assess power flows, and determine the best connection locations for new customers.

-The Engineering Co-Op may perform computer-aided analysis of customer interruption history and energy demand data in an ongoing assessment of system design to identify and address system deficiencies.

-The Co-op may also assist in co-generation requests, ranging from residential solar panels to commercial gas fired turbines.

-The Co-op would also assist in a range of other technical concerns related to the maintenance, operation, reinforcement, and at times, the emergency restoration of the power delivery system.

-Other tasks and assignments as assigned by leadership

We are seeking students who meet the following criteria:

  •  Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Data Analytics
  •   Minimum GPA: Major 2.8
  •   Strong skills in MS Access and Excel 
  •   A track record of outstanding academic performance
  •   Eagerness to contribute in a team-oriented environment
  •   Ability to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment 
  •  Excellent leadership, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills 
Preferred Skills 

·Undergraduate with experience performing bench testing, and documentation of test or lab results

· Experience with Python, VBA, or Arduinos

·Knowledge of SQL a plus but not a requirement

·Undergraduate with experience performing bench testing, and documentation of test or lab result

·PowerBi– basic to intermediate level
