Provide overall leadership and direction for Safety and Human Performance programs, including the development of performance measures and targets. Drive participation and performance in development and implementation of strategies and implementation of the Safety Management System. This position ensures that compliance activities adequately protect the interests of the company and fosters partnerships with the Exelon Utilities to ensure that compliance is achieved in a cost-effective manner and performance measures/targets are used to drive continuous improvement.

Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.


1. Provide leadership and set the strategic direction for the Safety and Human Performance organizations. Direct business control processes to insure budget, fiduciary and Sarbanes Oxley compliance. Insure development, implementation and maintenance of the Safety and Human Performance components of the Management Model.

2. Direct development, communication and implementation of safety policy, guidance and business practices for field operations. Ensure the company builds a self-critical working environment that identifies and address human performance trends in order to improve safety and operational performance. Identify performance measures, establish performance targets and drive continuous improvement.

3. Collaborate with operating groups in the creation of strategies and processes to insure compliance with Federal, State and local safety rules and DOT CDL and hazardous material requirements. Drive consistency among organizations when appropriate.

4. Collaborate with Corporate EH&S to identify utility contributions to Corporate strategies and business needs. Drive implementation of strategic activities throughout the utility.

5. Direct implementation of the Safety Management System. Lead or participate on the Safety Councils and in peer groups as needed.

6. Direct development of Safety and Human Performance business plans, strategies and process improvement initiatives. Identify performance measures, establish performance targets and drive continuous improvement.

7. Oversee the direction and develop the strategy for the Performance Assessment (Human Performance and Process Improvement) function and ensure the company builds a self-critical working environment that identifies human errors therefore improves safety and operational performance.



Bachelor of Science degree in safety management, engineering, or relevant field
Minimum 10 years’ utility operations, safety, or related experience.

Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations.

Strong interpersonal skills (oral and written communications), excellent writing skills, excellent team skills, PC/mainframe computer skills, and strong leadership ability.

Demonstrated ability to work with outside agencies.

Demonstrated knowledge of the fundamental principles of leadership.

Demonstrated ability to build consensus, establish trust, communicate effectively and foster culture change.

Demonstrated ability to implement process enhancements and efficiencies.

Demonstrated business acumen, employee awareness and ability to create value.

Working conditions may include frequent travel, availability to respond as needed in emergency situations, and exposure to hazardous materials.


Knowledge of Utility Operations.

Ability to analyze data and prepare reporting statistics.

Certificate in occupational health and safety.



This position is responsible for direction of the Safety process for the organizations comprising Delivery. In this capacity, the incumbent confers with Corporate EH&S to identify and evaluate potential utility contributions to corporate strategies and consults with utility management to determine impacts of the strategies to delineate required actions and to develop methodologies to achieve the required results in a cost-effective manner. The position also provides required guidance and technical assistance in the implementation of the Corporate Safety System, participates in the development of corporate performance targets and provides performance reporting for corporate use.

Duties also include overall responsibility for development and implementation of policies, programs, procedures and practices required for the utilities to achieve regulatory compliance. This position directs development of performance measures and targets and drives continuous improvements in performance. An integral part of this responsibility is consideration of the regulatory requirements for each of the states in which operations occur and determination of when to implement compliance activities that are consistent across Delivery.

This position directs the activities of approximately 25 associates with direct supervision of 5 associates.

This position has a dotted line reporting relationship with the Vice President – EH&S (Corporate group).
