Job Description


Role and Responsibilities

  • Provide Safety Management System (SMS) assistance and support as required to meet company and Corporate Safety goals.  Serves as the primary back-up to Safety Manager
  • Monitors day-to-day safety performance by assisting with field audits, hazard identification and injury prevention
  • Compiles statistical data from field audits and observations to improve Company safety performance
  • Ensures day-to-day operations are in compliance with Federal, State, Local and Company SMS requirements
  • Develops and coordinates required Safety and Health training, safety alerts and meeting topics are completed and on time.  
  • Coordinates accident investigations, Root Cause and Corrective Actions, and follow-up activities for all incidents.
  • Coordinating and implementing all aspects of the SMS such that the proper plans and controls are in place to reduce and/or eliminate hazards, incidents and injuries
  • Implements and coordinates improvement plans that will identify and eliminate hazardous conditions and unsafe behaviors that drive a reduction in Company Recordables, DART, Severity rates, etc.
  • Maintains all Company, safety-related documentation and records
  • Maintains and coordinates Safety Incentive program
  • Manages safety supplies, requisitions, and ensures monthly budget is not exceeded.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • B.S. degree in safety and health or related field with at least 6-8 years’ experience , M.S. degree in safety health or related field  with 4-6 years’ experience in coordination and compliance of health & safety activities and functions or 20 years industry experience with demonstrated ability to recognize and mitigate hazards in the field and ability teach/coach others in regard to Hazard Awareness
  • Acts with integrity, open and honest communication, respecting others, working together with team, strong commitment to SMS and overall continuous improvement.
  • Naturally able to build “followership” as a Safety and Health leader
  •  Strong organizer; takes initiative; adapts quickly to change; high level of work standard
  • Ability to work inside and outside in variable temperatures and environments. Ability to climb ladders, access scaffolding, and other various tasks.
  • Physical Demands:  Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (i.e. eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, gloves, fall protection equipment, etc.)
  • Excellent judgment, ability to solve problems, facilitate and implement solutions
Preferred Skills
Demonstrates high-performance attributes:
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities with regard to continuous improvement to overall SMS
  • Excellent communication skills; written and oral
  • Good meeting facilitation skills
  • Skilled at coaching and giving positive feedback
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks, projects, and activities at one time
  • Experience and working knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • CSP or CIH designation a plus
