Primary Purpose of Position:


The State and Local Senior Transaction Tax Analyst (SALT Senior) applies state and local transaction tax knowledge and experience to support and achieve an efficient and accurate transaction tax compliance process, assist tax and business partners with forecasting, transaction tax inquiries and business initiatives. The SALT Senior reviews significant transaction tax returns, processes payments, reviews and initiates accounting entries and reconciliations, develops, monitors and improves compliance processes and information flow, assists with integrating new business transactions, and supports other teams concerning transaction tax compliance information needs. This individual will leverage strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop relationships with business partners. 


Primary Duties and Accountabilities:

• Reviews significant transaction tax returns for accuracy, processes tax payments, reviews and initiates journal entries, reviews and develops forecasts, and reviews and performs reconciliations and variance analyses. 


• Serves as liaison to third-party compliance service provider and supports compliance efforts, including, for example, the preparation of original and amended tax returns and refund claims, the execution of internal controls (SOX 404).


• Gathers and communicates relevant information to the service provider or takes direct action concerning various compliance-related matters, including, for example, new business registrations, tax account closures, tax authority notice resolution.


• Assists with establishing, streamlining or transforming transaction tax compliance processes through implementation and support of process or technology improvements.


• Provides support for internal business partners by participating and effectively communicating tax compliance impact of business projects, developments and process changes and serving as a resource for transaction tax-related inquiries.


• Develops and communicates tax compliance requirements for tax and business projects and assists with related integration efforts.


• Gathers and provides information to support internal data requests for transaction tax audits.


• Performs special projects as assigned by the State and Local Transaction Tax Manager.

Qualifications

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS 

Minimum: 

• Undergraduate Accounting or other financial discipline
• At least 5 years related experience including at least 3 years of professional tax experience focusing on transaction tax compliance
• Familiarity with all areas of federal and state transaction tax law
• Appreciation of the impact of taxes on the financial statements
• Good research, writing and communication skills
• 40 hours of ongoing annual continuing professional education will be required of all professionals in the Department (at the Company’s expense)


Preferred:

Energy/Utility industry experience is desirable, though not at the expense of a broad base of experience

Certified Public Accountant or other financial certification and/or advanced degree (MST)

Transaction tax compliance experience with a multistate organization involving a large volume of filings for multiple legal entities

Familiarity with automated sales and use tax engines and compliance systems (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, Suretax)

Tax research and audit experience
