PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

The purpose of Architecture Management is to define the various technology building blocks that constitute the enterprise and their inter-relationships, along with the principles guiding their design and evolution over time. These principles inform Service Portfolio Management roadmaps to ensure the right mix of supported technology services are provided to achieve business value as defined by the business strategy. The Principal Platform Architect is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the technology platform roadmaps that support our enterprise applications and services. They will provide technical expertise to align IT solutions with architectural standards within the overall enterprise architecture governance process, ensuring that all architecture processes are adhered to for IT, Innovation, and Business-initiated projects. This role demands a comprehensive understanding of cloud and on-premises infrastructure, networking, security, and best practices in platform architecture. The ideal candidate will exhibit exceptional problem-solving skills, excellent communication abilities, and a keen interest in staying abreast of industry trends. The Principal Platform Architect will support the development of IT standards for technology solutions by participating in new technology pilots, evaluating technical advantages, market availability of products, and the risks and benefits of technology to meet business needs. They will offer technical guidance, direction, and insights to project managers and stakeholders regarding IT system solutions and improvements within the enterprise environment. The role also involves participating in the development and optimization of documentation and tools to facilitate operational transition and turnover for the support of various cloud and on-prem architectures, designs, and services being standardized and deployed. These solutions include sustainable patterns for cloud and on-premise computing and application hosting architectures in support of enterprise IT project delivery. The Principal Platform Architect must be adaptable for special projects or initiatives when required and work closely with technology vendors as necessary.

Note: This is a hybrid position (in-office with remote flexibility). Employees are required to be in office at least three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).


PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Strategic Vision and Leadership: Develop and articulate strategic visions for technology platforms, including both infrastructure and application platforms. Provide thought leadership on industry trends, aligning platform strategies with business goals, and driving organizational change through innovative solutions. 
  • Technology Evaluation and Selection: Participate in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of infrastructure and application platform technologies. Conduct thorough analysis and testing to identify the best solutions for organizational needs and future growth. 
  • Advisory Expertise: Act as a trusted advisor to business architects and product owners. Ensure that infrastructure and application platform decisions meet business requirements and provide expert guidance on complex technical challenges. 
  • Platform Resiliency and Reliability: Architect and enhance infrastructure and application platforms to ensure high availability, security, disaster recovery, and optimal performance. Implement best practices to maintain system reliability and efficiency 
  • Mentorship and Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members and other technical staff. Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the team. 
  • Platform Modernization and Evolution: Modernize and enhance existing infrastructure and application platforms to meet product team requirements. Continuously integrate advancements in technology to improve platform maturity and competitiveness. 
  • Security Architecture: Design robust security architectures that adhere to industry standards and best practices. Develop and enforce security guidelines to protect company assets and data throughout the infrastructure lifecycle. 
  • Align to the established Exelon Architecture Principles and Standards: Ensure that all architectural designs and implementations adhere to the established Exelon Architecture Principles and Standards. Regularly review and update architecture practices to maintain compliance with these principles. 
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions. Promote a cooperative environment to ensure successful project outcomes and seamless technology integration 
  • Vendor Management: Build and maintain vendor relationships, participate in contract negotiations, and ensure vendors meet performance expectations. Ensure that vendor products and services deliver value to the organization. 
  • Deployment and Monitoring: Oversee the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of infrastructure and application components. Implement proactive measures to identify and resolve issues before they impact business operations. 
  • Documentation and Standards: Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation of infrastructure and application architecture, including diagrams, standards, and best practices. Ensure documentation is current and accessible for team members and stakeholders 
  • Industry Awareness: Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in infrastructure and application platform architecture. Regularly review and assess new developments to keep the organization at the forefront of technological advancements. 

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience); advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in infrastructure and application architecture, design, and implementation, with a strong track record of leadership in technical roles.
  • Extensive proficiency with major cloud platforms such as Azure or Oracle Cloud.
  • Deep technical expertise in multiple areas, such as application development, enterprise applications, IT systems engineering, or large-scale data management.
  • Strong, comprehensive knowledge of networking, including networking protocols, firewalls, load balancing, and advanced networking solutions.
  • Advanced experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) and containerization platforms (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Expertise with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar. Advanced understanding of security best practices and technologies, including encryption, identity and access management, compliance frameworks, and security architecture.
  • Proven excellence in problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex and large-scale technical issues.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and mentor teams effectively.
  • Mastery of change management principles associated with new technology implementations.
  • Thorough understanding and practical experience with project management principles and methodologies.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience in architecting and building highly scalable, resilient, and secure compute and storage solutions.
  • Extensive experience with both cloud and on-premises storage technologies (SAN, NAS), backup solutions (such as Veritas, Cohesity, Rubrik), and compute platforms (including VMware, Hyper-V, KVM).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, VMware Certified Professional) are a plus.
  • Advanced debugging and problem-solving skills specifically in Compute, Storage, and Backup technologies.
  • Experienced with scripting and automation tools like PowerShell, Ansible, Python, or other appropriate scripting tools.
  • Knowledge in Cyber Security, Disaster Recovery, and Business Continuity Planning related to Compute, Storage, and Backup environments.
  • Knowledge of NERC/CIP compliance for critical infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of project management principles, including Agile and Waterfall methodologies, as they relate to large-scale technology deployments.
  • Experience with capacity planning, performance tuning, and operational support for enterprise compute and storage systems.
