Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Hot-Tap Tech B position is a feeder position in the Job Family for the Pipeline Mechanic.  All task, duties and responsibilities listed below assume the Pipeline Mechanic B is working under the direct supervision of a Hot-Tap Tech or other qualified employee or has achieved demonstrated qualification to perform the task independent of direct supervision.

Performs specialized operations in the construction and maintenance of the gas distribution system, including but not limited to hot taps on all size pipes and bypass construction.

Assists in the set up and operation of equipment involving emission reduction, boring, drilling, cutting, tapping, splitting, bursting, stopping off pressurized mains and services. 

Performs routine maintenance and adjustments on all equipment required for these operations.

Performs butt, electric and sidewall fusion on plastic piping.  

Cleans and maintains all equipment involved in operations.  

Assists in specialized adjustments and maintenance operations on valves, expansion joints and other appurtenances involving the gas system. 

Supports crews in bar holing and leak search.  Provides gas service to new construction as necessary, 

Makes repairs to pipelines and pipe coatings as required by Pipeline/Distribution Integrity. 

Acquires skills to interprets system prints and drawings. 

Provides assistance with main and service connections.

Excavates job sites.  Operates truck-mounted cranes, mobile cranes, back hoes, mini excavators, trenchers and other specialized equipment & vehicles and equipment to transport equipment and conduct job specific activities.

Assists crews with lagging holes and assembling shoring (air and stick). 

Operates mechanized man lifts and may be required to work on platforms and at heights.  

Works with contractors. 

Proactively monitors latest operator qualification requirements and arranges training accordingly.

Working knowledge of Asset Suite 8 and Mobile Maps & GIS software.

Assists crews to facilitate tapping and stopping operations. 

Assists company and contractor welders.

Fabricates piping for construction work. 

Note:
Is required to work during emergencies and may be subject to work night shifts.

Works in deep trenches near pressurized mains and near vehicular traffic concentrations.

Subject to 24 hour a day call-in.

All work, including emergency work performed under all weather conditions.

Operates truck-mounted crane.

Job Specifications:
Knowledge:
One-year experience in underground construction including tapping/stopping operations, pipe bursting, insertion of casing, auguring, and drilling under highways.

Knowledge of and 1-year experience using the tools, equipment and procedures used in the construction and maintenance of the gas system.

Skills/Abilities:
Ability to interpret construction drawings.

Must satisfy and maintain respirator qualifications.

Valid Level 1 authorization or appropriate Commercial Driver's License, and ability to meet Company driving standards and notify the Company of changes potentially impacting ability to drive.   

Must complete all required Operator Qualification training and maintain recertifications as required.

This position is considered a “safety sensitive” function and may be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing. 


Demonstrated ability to write, speak, read, comprehend and communicate clearly and accurately in the English language.

Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for callout overtime, if required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.

Education/Experience:
