  1. PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Assists in the testing, maintenance, repair and modification of Company and external customers fiber optic communication equipment and networks used to transport critical company communications to include Substation & Distribution Automation, fault locating equipment, all RF communications networks and associated equipment, simulcast voice communication network, base stations, repeaters, satellite voting systems, paging transmitters, data transceivers, physical security alarm systems, DFR and RTU circuits, SCADA equipment, 2-wire & 4-wire communication circuits, telephone equipment and lines, audio tone channel equipment, communication network alarm systems, computer control and monitoring systems, etc.

 

 

  1. SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

 

Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  1. Assists higher classified employees in the testing, maintenance, repair and modification of Company and external customers fiber optic communication equipment and networks used to transport critical company communications to include Substation & Distribution Automation, fault locating equipment, all RF communications networks and associated equipment, simulcast voice communication network, base stations, repeaters, satellite voting systems, paging transmitters, data transceivers, physical security alarm systems, DFR and RTU circuits, SCADA equipment, 2-wire & 4-wire communication circuits, telephone equipment and lines, audio tone channel equipment, communication network alarm systems, computer control and monitoring systems, etc

 

  1. Assists higher classified employees in the installation, testing, programming and provisioning and maintenance of company fiber optic communication systems to include, Cisco, Imux, Jmux, MPLS, Focus, DWDM and other fiber based networks.  This includes complex testing and evaluation of the fiber optic equipment used in conjunction with communications and the control of all radio and data transmission systems etc. 

 

  1. Assists high classified employees inspecting, testing and maintaining the fiber optic networks.

 

  1. Assists higher classified employees working with other departments and contractors engaged in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and modification of fiber optic communication equipment and networks.

 

  1. Assists higher classified employees investigating reports of trouble on fiber optic communications equipment in power plants, substations, or field locations.  Inspects and locates malfunctioning components, makes necessary adjustments or repairs.

 

  1. Performs tests and inspection of fiber optic communication equipment, control systems and instruments.  Modifies, calibrates and repairs system components, etc., to maintain proper operation in accordance with Federal, State, and Company requirements and standards.

 

  1. Assists and performs special field, shop or laboratory tests as assigned. 

 

  1. Assist higher classified employees making annual inspections of fiber optic networks/systems to ensure the perform as designed in the event of fiber interruptions.

 

  1. Attends training classes and studies technical manuals, drives Company vehicles and operates all Company radio and communications equipment.

 

  1. Directs and trains other peers and lower classified employees on above listed equipment and electronic theory.

 

  1. Maintain good housekeeping in work areas and ensures shop/field/truck stock supplies are kept at adequate levels.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Qualifications

 

 

  1. Two years of fiber optic cable splicing and/or fiber optic equipment installations and troubleshooting of fiber transmission cables.

 

  1. Ability to perform fiber splicing and use all the technics and tools required to splice loose tube and ribbon fiber optic transmission cables. 

 

  1. Obtain within 24 months a valid FCC 2nd Class radio telephone operators license.

 

  1. Possess good knowledge of Company communication and associated electronic control systems.  Possess ability to use sophisticated test equipment and instruments.

 

  1. Ability to interpret schematics, diagrams and drawings requiring technical knowledge of electric and electronic circuitry, controls, etc.

 

  1. Possess a working knowledge of Company safety regulations, applicable to work performed, and general First-Aid methods and practices.

 

  1. Possess a valid state issued motor vehicle operator’s permit.

 

  1. Obtain and maintain a DOT Certification.
