PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Come join our team of distribution material engineers!  Material engineers are responsible for the specification, engineering strategy, and lifecycle management of equipment and materials used across ComEd's distribution system.

Introduces new equipment to the distribution system, including design, training, and operating procedures.  Develops, updates, and maintains engineering practices, application standards and guidance used on the distribution system.  Interacts across engineering, construtcion, and regulatory organizations to design and implement system improvements.  Works on industry specifications and working groups including IEEE, NESC, EPRI, or NEETRAC.

Works with equipment vendors to develop equipment specifications and requirements.  Investigates equipment failure modes and issues, performing forensic root cause analysis, extent of condition and develops corrective actions.

Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Active role in developing and implementing department vision and strategy
  • Engineer responsible for material strategy in EVs, DA devices, batteris, meters, etc.
  • Development and Review of Technical Bulletin Documentation
  • Development and Review of Engineering Standard Practices (ESPs)
  • Development and Review of Equipment and Material Specifications (EMs)
  • Collaborate with and provide technical support to internal engineering and other work groups
  • ComEd representative in industry form (e.g. EPRI, NEETRAC) for responsible categories of equipment, performing benchmarking and driving updates to equipment type to align with changing/advancing industry standards
  • Engage with vendors to continously improve distribution equipment and trails new technologies
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert for a specific class of distribution equipment:  Switchgear, Reclosers, ATOs, Capacitor Banks, AMI/Metering, Commercial Switchboards, Fiber/FOSC or Inverters/Energy Storage
  • Point of Contact for technical questions related to material application, operation, and failures

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer (2) (3) Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, codes methods, and practices unique to areas of expertise.
  • Eight or more years of professional engineering experience (1) (3) (See Note 3. Thorough knowledge and experience in unique areas of engineering expertise.
  • Ability to apply advanced engineering principles to identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Minimum of three related career experiences (4) (i.e., changes in technical job responsibilities, which may or may not include a change in department) OR
  • Lead Member of a recognized industry committee OR
  • Professional Engineer's License (2), advanced technical degree, MBA or Project Management Certification (1) Master's degree in Engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (2) License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing. (3) PE License reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (4) Career related experiences is defined as changes in technical job responsibilities and does not have to include a change in department.
  • Note: Items (1) and (3) are mutually inclusive, whereby the maximum experience requirement reduction is one (1) year (e.g., in the case of an employee with both a master's degree in Engineering AND a PE license, the minimum experience requirement would be reduced by one (1) year).


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • EV Charging, Inverters, Beneficial Electrification equipment manufacturing or design experience 
  • Distribution or Substation equipment manufacturing or design experience 
  • Experience in design and installation of fiber cable and splicing
  • Experience or knowledget of the specific functional area or discipline (e.g., Utility design, planning or construction experinece)
  • Experience in developing equipment construction standards
  • Experience evaluating or developing specifications for equipment performan and selection
  • Graduate degree (1) or Graduate level work in Engineering, Business Administration or Project Management Certification
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (2) (3)
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all management levels.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as CYMDIST, PSS\E, Python, PSCAD, MATLAB, etc.
  • Ability to analyze industry wide trends and implement enhancements.
