PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

  • Lead the corporate media relations/external communications function for Exelon, under the supervision of the Director of Strategic Communications., including the development and execution of high-level and detailed strategies, plans and tactics to support Exelon’s reputation among a variety of stakeholders, including customers, employees, shareholders, elected officials, regulators and the media.
  • Lead team of two media relations professionals, with a focus on setting direction, execution, coaching, development and ensuring the success of individuals and the team.
  • Build a comprehensive proactive communications strategy and assist the Director with advising and counseling executive leaders with respect to media relations issues, strategies and tactics.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with producers, reporters, bloggers and other traditional and new media representatives.
  • Prepare executives for media opportunities, including organizing media training, writing key messages and conducting preparation sessions.
  • Develop and pitch proactive corporate stories to the media (broadcast, digital and print) to obtain top-tier earned media coverage in support of Exelon’s reputation, values and business. Ensure alignment with reputation research results.
  • Build strong relationships and collaborate with Marketing, Digital, Internal and Social corporate teams, as well as operating company media teams to coordinate media strategies and tactics and amplify corporate news.
  • Oversee Public Relay in daily clips process, as well as providing regular metrics and reporting of outcomes to Corporate Affairs and company leadership. Build and/or modify strategies and tactics based on the results of monitoring.
  • Oversee day-to-day work of PR agency.
  • Create compelling, timely materials, such as news releases, pitch letters, fact sheets and other content for pitches, reports and OpEds, to support campaigns, briefings, report submissions, press announcements, etc. Manage communications projects and monitor issues. 
  • In concert with Director of Strategic Communications and VP of Corporate Communications & Marketing, manage issues/crises as necessary
  • Drive the application process for nationally important awards and rankings


PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop, manage, and execute proactive strategic media relations plans to support business objectives. (40%)
  • Work with media relations team/OpCo communicators to respond to media inquiries. (20%)
  • Assist Director of Communications in advising and counseling executives on external communications issues and activities affecting the company. (10%)
  • Fulfill managerial responsibilities regarding assigned staff (e.g., Employment, Compensation, Performance Evaluation, coaching, developing, etc.) and participate as a key manager in career development and business planning. (15%)
  • Execute external outreach: ensure strong press relations. (15%)


JOB SCOPE

  • Must work continuously, effectively and skillfully with the Director of Strategic Communications, as well as other Corporate Communications functions, as well as OpCo communications.
  • Position oversees and manages up to three communicators.
  • Responsible for staff communicators and their activities.
  • Requires significant outreach to media and other external audiences
  • Requires ability to work independently and in conjunction with Communications leadership, other Corporate Comms functions, executives and OpCo communicators.
  • Some travel required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-year relevant degree and a minimum of 10 or more years of experience in communications, journalism, or a related field.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.

  • Strong interpersonal communication and management skills.

  • A high level of self-motivation and independence will be critical.

  • Strong presentation skills.

  • Strategic thinking ability; self-motivation; organizational sensitivity.

  • Excellent follow through capability; demands high level of performance from self and others.

  • Demonstrated managerial experience.

  • Ability to obtain unescorted access to a nuclear site, as applicable.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in communications, journalism or related discipline.
