Come join our team of distribution material engineers!  Material engineers are responsible for the specification, engineering strategy, and lifecycle management of equipment and materials used across ComEd's distribution system.

Introduces new equipment to the distribution system, including design, training, and operating procedures.  Develops. updates, and maintains engineering practices, application standards and guidance used on the distribution system.  Interacts across engineering, construction, and regulatory organizations to design and implement system improvements.  Works on industry specifications and working groups including IEEE, NESC, EPRI, or NEETRAC.

Works with equipment vendors to develop equipment specifications and requirements.  Investigates equipment failure modes and issues, performing forensic root cause analysis, extent of condition and develops corrective actions.  Acts as recognized technical authority in a specialized engineering area.

Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.


  • Active role in developing and implementing department vision and strategy
  • Lead Engineer responsible for material strategy in EVs, DA devices, batteries, meters, etc.
  • Lead Engineer Reviewer of Technical Bulletin Documentation
  • Lead Engineer Reviewer of Engineering Standard Practices (ESPs)
  • Lead Engineer Reviewer of Equipment and Material Specifications (EMs)
  • Lead Point of Contact for forensic analysis of equipment, engaging and delegating analysis to other overhead equipment SME's as necessary for specific categories of equipment
  • Collaborate with and provide technical support to internal engineering and other work groups
  • Primary ComEd representative in industry forums (e.g. EPRI, NEETRAC) for responsible categories of equipment, performing benchmarking and driving updates to equipment type to align with changing/advancing industry standards
  • Engage with vendors to continuously improve overhead equipment and trial new equipment
  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert or a specific class of distribution equipment:  Switchgear, Reclosers, ATOs, Capacitor Banks, AMI/Metering, Commercial Switchboards, Fiber/FOSC or Inverters/Energy Storage
  • Point of Contact for technical questions related to material applications, operation, and failures
  • Leads highly technical consultation and training through OJT/OJE (may include some class room instruction as well) on highly complex and unique technical areas requiring the application of advanced engineering principles and may require advanced knowledge of complex analog and digital field test equipment. 
  • Leads the work activities of project teams and others on the implementation of large specialized technical projects and/or programs in order to develop studies, proposals, commissioning plans to support safely energizing and placing major utility and customer systems and equipment On System. 
  • Participates in department/project management planning, and monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results. 
  • Acts as an expert witness and provide expert opinions for internal committees. 


  • Highly influential on strategic management decisions that can have a major impact on the company.
  • Support/Lead employees and or contractors in the execution of plans developed to initially energize utility or customer equipment/systems and placed On System.
  • Set direction for the organization in regards to technical issues.
  • Applies technical knowledge to help promote a safe work environment and to enhance customer satisfaction



  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipline with at least 9 years of professional engineering experience. (1) (3) (See Note)
  • Completed Assignments and Projects showing evidence of:
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
  • Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of latest technologies necessary to perform a variety of specialized unique or complex assignments for various installation types of services.
  • *Note: there are a limited number of personnel available in the industry with the required knowledge, ability and experience. (1) Master's degree in Engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (2) License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing. (3) PE License reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year.
  • Note: Items (1) and (3) are mutually inclusive, whereby the maximum experience requirement reduction is one (1) year (e.g., in the case of an employee with both a master's degree in Engineering AND a PE license, the minimum experience requirement would be reduced by one (1) year.


  • Proficient in forensic analysis or willing to learn
  • Proficient in the Equipment Introduction guidelines per AM-EU-9074 Approval of New T&D Electic Equipment
  • Participates in technical discussion with internal customers, internal committees, or Exelon Utilities to share or enhance knowledge of Engineering Standard Practices including but not limited to best practices, failure modes, and application of emerging technology equipment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Access, Power BI, AS8 software
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Ability to delegate effectively
  • Distribution or Substation equipment manufacturing or design experience
  • Experience or knowledge of the specific functional area or discipline (e.g Utility design, planning or contruction experience
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all management levels.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the work activity of others.
  • Master of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer 
  • Industry expert who participates or leads industry committee or working groups or has published technical documents.
