PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
Come join our team of distribution material engineers! Material engineers are responsible for the specification, engineering strategy, and lifecycle management of equipment and materials used across ComEd's distribution system.
Introduces new equipment to the distribution system, including design, training, and operating procedures. Develops, updates, and maintains engineering practices, application standards and guidance used on the distribution syste. Interacts across engineering, construction, and regulatory organizations to design and implement system improvements. Works on industry specifications and working groups including IEEE, NESC, EPRI, or NEETRAC.
Works with equipment vendors to develop equipment specifications and requirements. Investigates equipment failure modes and issues, performing forensic root cause analysis, extent of condition and develops corrective actions.
Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Serves as a Subject Matter Expert for a specific class of distribution equipment: Switchgear, Reclosers, ATO's, Capacitor Banks, AMI/Metering, Commercial Switchboards, Fiber/FOSC or Inverters/Energy Storage
- Point of Contact for technical questions related to material application, operation, and failures.
- Leads and performs engineering assignments associated with critical engineering projects or a number of small projects with many complex features require extensive company experience that may include leading employees or contractors in the commissioning of electrical systems and equipment to be placed On System.
- Performs assignments in areas where engineering precedents are incomplete, lacking or require broad experience.
- Evaluates, develops and implements projects that have significant financial and operational impact.
- May serve as an expert for organization in a specific area or responsibility that may include the delivery of classroom instruction/training and/or OJT/OJE.
- Performs assignments while acting independently, and may lead multi-discipline teams.
- Provides recommendations and implements action plans to improve performance and cost effectiveness.
- Participates in technical and industry societies and committees to enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues in areas of company interest.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field (non-engineer) (1) or equivalent relevant education / experience (See Section Below) (2) AND 6 or more years of field experience in engineering, construction, or applicable utility experience. (1) Examples of technical fields (non-engineer) include Engineering Technology, Electronics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, etc. (2) Relevant education / experience is knowledge and skills that may be acquired through job experiences or education programs related to those acquired through a formal technical degree program. Examples include experience gained in a military role applicable to electric power distribution, completion of a journey-level electrician program (e.g., overhead / underground electrician, electrical mechanic), or completion of a company-sponsored technical education program (e.g., Elements of Electrical Engineering (E3) series). The equivalent relevant education / experience is in addition to the position's minimum experience requirements.
- Ability to analyze and interpret electrical and mechanical systems.
- Knowledge and ability to apply problem-solving approaches.
- Knowledge of construction, operations or engineering principles and practices.
- Knowledge of complex field test equipment.
- Broad knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices necessary to perform routine assignments for a specific discipline installations, or service.
- Equivalent Relevant Education / Experience: Associate's degree in a technical field (1) AND 8 or more years of field experience in engineering, construction or applicable utility experience Non-degreed or non-technical degree equivalent relevant education (2) AND 8 or more years relevant utility experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Distribution or Substation equipment manufacturing or design experience.
- Experience in design and installation of fiber cable and splicing
- Experience or knowledge of the specific functional area or discipline (e.g., utility design, planning, or construction experience)
- Experience in developing equipment construction standards
- Evaluation of equipment and selection
- Clearly demonstrated team leadership abilities on critical projects.
- Fiber Design, SCADA, or 61850 experience
