PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Develops studies, plans, criteria, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, performance assessments, integrated systems analysis, cost estimates, budgets, associated with the planning, design, licensing, construction, operation, and maintenance of Exelon's electric generation, transmission, distribution, gas and telecommunication facilities/systems under the guidance of an experienced engineer. Provides consultation and recommendations to the Company within and to other business units and/or customers as a result of studying company or customer-owned systems, processes, equipment, vehicles or facilities under an experienced engineer. Reviews financial data from budget and actual costs of projects under the guidance of an experienced engineer. Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.

The Engineer will work in BGE’s Distribution Automation and Technology group will play a key role in supporting the development and deployment of several key Smart Grid technologies (distribution protection, distribution automation, distribution energy resources, automated fault circuit indicators, etc.). The ideal candidate will be familiar with the electrical distribution system, and some distribution devices technology. Experience with protection applications, automatic circuit reclosers, distribution field area networks is preferred but not required. The successful candidate will:

  1. Research and implement emerging technologies designed to address future challenges facing distribution system (large renewable generation, advance switching demands, fiber optic upgrades)
  2. Support the maintenance of existing technology
  3. Support the deployment of new technology on distribution system

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Leads and performs assignments in specialized areas requiring extensive engineering expertise. Requiring maintaining state of the art engineering credential in the specialized technical area.  
  • Leads and performs engineering tasks and projects associated with a critical or analytical engineering project or a small number of complex projects that require specialized knowledge in many areas, may include field testing troubleshooting, and peer review. 
  • Evaluates, develops, implements and leads projects that have significant financial and operational impact, may also develop initial commissioning plans. Plans, writes and performs tasks for documentation deliverables and projects 
  • Participates in department planning, through field/site walkdowns, attend meetings/conference calls, provide budget recommendations and monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results. 
  • Performs assignments while acting independently, and may lead multi-discipline teams, may include providing direct oversight of contractors. 
  • Serves as an expert in specialized area.  
  • Acts as an expert witness or provide expert opinions as required. 
  • Provides recommendations to management and implements action plans to improve performance and cost effectiveness. 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Deploy cutting technology onto the electric distribution system
  • Perform 13 kV - 34 kV protection studies and DA coordination analysis
  • Perform Automatic Restoration Scheme Failure analysis and distribution circuit event analysis
  • Support DER impact studies
  • Support ad-hoc emergent work that may require DA settings support
  • Participates in technical and industry societies and committees to enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues in areas of company

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
  • Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices.
  • Two or more years of professional engineering experience
  • General knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, and practices necessary to perform assignments for a specific discipline, various installations, or services

  • Engineer in Training License
  • Strong written and oral communication/presentation skills, report generation & technical writing skills
  • Interpersonal skills & the ability to collaborate with peers and managers
  • Consulting and needs assessment skills
  • Time, project management and multi-tasking skills
  • Experience or understanding of distribution system
  • Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)
  • Experience with or understanding of protection hardware such as switches
